Cong Disapproves Modi's Presence at Jaya's Swearing-In
Congress today disapproved of Narendra Modi's presence at the swearing-in of Jayalalithaa as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, but kept up suspense over speculation that Sonia Gandhi had invited the AIADMK supremo for tea.
"I don't think it needs any elaboration that the Gujarat Chief Minister has orchestrated the worst genocide in Independent India and he should not be touched with a bargepole," party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters.
He said this when asked about the presence of Modi along with a galaxy of leaders at Jayalalithaa's swearing in for a third time at the head of a 34-member Ministry, capping her spectacular come back to power in Tamil Nadu with a landslide mandate.
Asked whether the Congress President has invited Jayalalithaa for tea, he said Gandhi had made "courtesy calls" to various political leaders in the wake of the results in the Assembly polls in five states.
"However, what transpired in those conversations, I am not privy to the contents....", he said.
Gandhi's phone call to Jayalalithaa had sparked off speculation in political circles about possible realignment of forces. Congress had fought the Tamil Nadu polls as part of the DMK-led alliance and ended up with just five seats.
DMK is the third largest constituent of the UPA at the Centre after Congress and Trinamool Congress and has 18 members in the Lok Sabha.
Yesterday, in Chennai, when asked whether Gandhi had invited her for tea, Jayalalithaa had said: "She (Gandhi) spoke to me over phone and congratulated on my victory."
